Can God Use Me? A Message to the Next Generation

If you are a high school or college student and have ever asked yourself the question, “Can God use me?” you are not alone. It’s easy to disqualify yourself because of your age, your grade, your past, or the feeling that you’re not experienced enough. But Scripture tells a different story. Some of the most powerful movements of God began with young people who simply trusted Him with the details.

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” -1 Timothy 4:12

This is not just a reminder for others—it is for you, too. Do not look down on yourself because you are young. You, in this season of your life, are seen by God and fully capable of being used by Him right now. Your story, your heart, and your voice can carry the gospel. You have a role to play in the Great Commission—not someday, but today. The question, then, is not “Can God use me?” The real question is, What can I do to live missionally as a young person right now? Let’s take a look.

5 Ways You Can Live Missionally Right Now

Pray with intention

Prayer fuels the heart of missions. It might sound simple, but prayer is one of the most powerful things you can do as a young believer. When you talk to God with purpose, you begin to align your heart with His—and that is exactly where transformation happens. Begin by praying for your school, your friends, and even people you have never met. Ask God to give you His eyes to see those around you, to send you wherever He wants you to go, and to break your heart for the unreached, those who have little to no access to the gospel. If you want some help knowing how you can be praying for the unreached souls of our world, click here. Paul’s words in Colossians 4 come from a place of deep urgency for the gospel to be made known. Even while imprisoned, Paul does not ask for comfort or escape—he asks for open doors to keep sharing the message of Jesus. His devotion to prayer, even in difficult circumstances, reminds us that missions is never about our convenience; it is about our obedience and our connection to God’s heart.

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains.” -Colossians 4:2–3

This is where missional living begins: not with a platform or a passport but with a prayer. Right now, wherever you are in your life, begin to intercede for your brothers and sisters in Christ who are taking the gospel to the darkest corners of the Earth. Ask that the Lord would protect them like He did Paul and Silas while they were imprisoned and bless them with favor as He did Joseph in the Pharaoh’s palace.

Live Like Jesus Where You Are

You don’t necessarily have to travel across the world to be on a mission. Your mission field might be your cafeteria, your soccer team, your classroom, your social media account, or your own home. Every conversation, every action, every reaction is an opportunity to reflect the love of Christ.

“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” -1 Peter 2:12

Allow everything you do to point to the goodness and love of God. You are a representative of Jesus Christ and have the opportunity to demonstrate His grace and love to those around you. You may never know the full impact of a kind word, a patient response, or a decision to live with integrity when no one else does. But when you choose to live like Jesus in your everyday spaces, you become a light in the darkness exactly where God has placed you. You don’t need a microphone or a stage or large social media following to make a difference. You just need a heart that consistently says, “Jesus, use me today.” Let your life be a living testimony that points people not to your perfection but to the perfect love of Christ working in you.

Share Your Story

Boldly exclaim the miraculous wonders God has performed in your life. Declare from the rooftops that He has been good to you, has saved you, and has delivered you from the sin that once held you captive. Be careful not to write your testimony off because it doesn’t look like someone else’s. If God has moved in your life—if He has saved you and set a place for you in eternity—that is something to rejoice over, to preach to the nations. You were once lost, but you have been found by Jesus. You were once condemned, but now you are redeemed and restored into the family of the King.

“‘Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.’” -Mark 5:19

Your story, no matter how simple it may seem, carries the weight of eternity because it points to the mercy and goodness of Jesus. So speak boldly, humbly, and often about what He’s done for you. You never know whose heart might be softened, whose faith might be sparked, or whose life might be changed because you chose to share. Your story matters because He’s the One who wrote it.

Serve Faithfully in Your Local Church

You don’t have to wait until you have “arrived” spiritually to be used in the church. In fact, one of the most meaningful ways to live missionally is to show up and serve faithfully in your local church community. Whether it is rocking babies in the nursery, helping run slides on the production team, greeting at the door, or leading worship, every act of service matters. You may think it’s small, but God uses faithful hands and willing hearts to accomplish eternal things.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” -1 Peter 4:10

When you serve, you are not just filling a need; you are building the Kingdom. Do not underestimate what God can do through a servant-hearted teenager or young adult who says, “I’m here—use me.”

Say, “Yes,” to God’s Leading, Even If It’s Scary

This might be the hardest one. Saying, “Yes,” to God—fully, openly, and without knowing all the details—can feel overwhelming. Obedience often stretches us beyond our comfort zone. But here’s what you need to remember: the God who calls you is the same God who promises to be with you always (Matthew 28:20). Following Him won’t always feel easy. Sometimes He will ask you to speak up when you’d rather stay silent. Other times, He will call you into leadership when you feel unqualified, or stir a dream in your heart that feels too big to carry. But if God is calling, your job is not to figure it all out—it is simply to say, “Yes.”

“But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.’” -Jeremiah 1:7

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” -Isaiah 6:8

God does not only call the qualified—He qualifies the called. Do not wait until you feel ready. Step out in obedience, and watch how He prepares, equips, and strengthens you along the way. Are you sensing that call, that stirring inside you to go and carry His name to the ends of the Earth. If you feel that spark of passion to see every nation, tribe, and tongue know Jesus, then maybe a mission trip is your next step in obedience. There are souls near and far who need the saving grace of Jesus. If you sense God calling you to go, don’t wait.

You Matter to God’s Mission

You don’t have to wait until you are older, more experienced, or more confident. God is not looking for perfection—He is looking for willingness to serve. He is looking for young people who are eager to live differently, love boldly, and follow Him wherever He leads.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” -Ephesians 2:10

How can God use you? He will work through you: When you pray intentionally. When you live like Jesus where you are. When you share your story. When you serve in the church. When you say, “Yes,” to the next thing He asks of you. Your life has purpose, and your yes can change everything.
