Field Story: A Skeptic Surrenders to Jesus

In a high-security corner of Southeast Asia, along a heavily monitored border, the gospel is moving through spaces where expatriate missionaries cannot safely go. In these zones, the strategy relies heavily on the bold obedience of local leaders.

It was here, after completing a Four Fields training, that a local believer named Minh set out to share the gospel with one of the most unlikely people in the region: a man named Quoc. Quoc was not just a skeptic; he was the local Communist party secretary and chairman of his commune.

Quoc was also trapped in severe alcoholism. For months, Minh shared the story of God with him, but Quoc refused to listen. Then, the heavy drinking took its toll, leaving Quoc critically ill. Desperate and confined to his bed, he finally did what he swore he would never do: he invited Minh into his home to pray for him.

The Lord answered that prayer with healing, and Quoc surrendered his life to Jesus.

But following Jesus in a Communist stronghold carries a steep price. Local authorities started to persecute him and threatened to strip away his benefits and financial support. Even his own wife, Linh, furious at his conversion, began to abuse him when he tried to read his Bible. Quoc never fought back. He simply gave up alcohol and stayed anchored in the truth.

Witnessing his radical transformation—his sobriety, his healing, and his unshakeable peace—Linh’s heart broke open. She, too, chose to follow Jesus.

Quoc immediately began sharing his faith with others, and today, an under-the-radar house church of 15 new believers meets regularly right inside the former party secretary’s home.

While local authorities continue to harass this church, Minh has recently returned to the village to train Quoc, teaching him to become a mature, local church planter who can continue to multiply the movement.
