Rivers in the Desert: How God’s Living Waters Transforms Barren Places

“New Thing” by Red Rocks Worship

Scripture

“I will open rivers on the bare heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.” -Isaiah 41:18, ESV

“Even when their paths wind through the dark valley of tears, they dig deep to find a pleasant pool where others find only pain. He gives to them a brook of blessing filled from the rain of an outpouring.” -Psalm 84:6, TPT

New Life in Barren Places

Receive these promises from God’s Word today. Look at your places of barrenness, wilderness, suffering, and regret and see what God is going to do in and through you. I believe it with all of my heart! He’s doing a new thing! If you need to, worship with that song again.

I must give testimony to the One who brings forth life in barren seasons and barren wombs. I receive stories of the hand of the God moving in the lives of women as He stirs and brings forth life in wilderness places. I don’t know if there is anything more gloriously celebratory to me than when women come alive with fresh passion and faith and who burn with the fire of God, in spite of what life has thrown them. I will give my zeal, my energy, my heart to see this come forth because I believe we are in a time in history when Heaven is moving in acceleration to see women arise in their calling, to be reset, restored, and renewed so they can be carriers of revival. Jesus was the leader of the first women’s liberation movement, and don’t you think for a second His heart has changed on the matter!

So much of what we will carry forward has been because we have walked through the valley of the shadow of death in past seasons. He has made us ready for this new era that is going to require the faith that was deposited from fiery trials and lions dens of past seasons. You don’t learn how to wage war by being sheltered from every trial and temptation. You wage war because He has personally taught your hand to bend a bow, chase a lion, tend sheep, and take the sword of the enemy and cut his head off. Sisters, I am going to declare to you today as I do often—the past places of pain and heartache are going to be the very places of anointing and authority for you. Redemption is coming. You will have a testimony to bring to a hopeless and dying world. You will have the words of victory and healing you wept in the dark night of the soul and declare over someone else for their breakthrough. Nothing will be wasted. Hear me on this; God will use every last drop from past seasons for what He is bringing forth in you right now. Don’t let go of Jesus!

I have a dear friend I am walking with in her own place of revival. I am watching God rescue, redeem, and restore her life and ultimately her calling to greater expanse. He is setting her feet on higher ground. It’s quite something to perceive the calling on another’s life and watch the hand of God tethering her to Himself to get her ready for increase. We need people who see for us the calling on our lives and call us forward into even deeper waters. We need those who have been in the ditch to have the words to call us up. We cannot lead others where we ourselves have not walked.

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'” -1 Samuel 16:7, ESV

“When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, ‘The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.’” -Judges 6:12, emphasis added

David didn’t see himself as a king, but God declared it. Gideon didn’t see himself as a mighty warrior as he was hiding in a wine press, but God saw that in him and declared it. If the Lord were standing before you, what would He call you today? Champion, victorious one, righteous, warrior, holy, pure, blameless, fearless, marked and called one, mighty woman of valor, or freedom fighter? I believe He would look at you and say all of these things because that is who He is inside of you. He is living His life and His identity inside of your surrendered life. What God has declared over your life, He will be faithful to fulfill it with exponentially more than what you envision. And He will go back, and all the things from past seasons will be marked by Him for His glory, redemption, victory, and harvest.

So based on that truth, let’s go back to those barren places where you have longed to see life come forth. Let’s go back and speak to the wilderness or the field of dry bones and declare to that thing that it’s time for life to come forth! We go in our identity of Christ in us, full of the Spirit of God who moves with resurrection power, surrounded by the love the Father and our identity as a daughter, and with the authority of Christ. We can see what He sees and speak His powerful Word over people, places, and situations. Nothing is untouchable when Jesus comes.

Rivers of Living Water

“On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”” -John 7:37-38 (ESV)

Rivers will flow from your innermost being because Jesus said they would. Period. They will overflow to people and cities and nations who have been longing to swim in the ocean of His goodness and never knew. We live surrendered, and the waters begin to flow. Thirsty people will begin to come to you for water as you allow those rivers to flow. And this is what it will look like:

The Promise of Transformation

“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the Lord , the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.” – Isaiah 35:1-10 (ESV)

Would you dare to position yourself at the feet of Jesus today and ask Him to increase the flow of the river coming forth from your life? Would you dare to ask Him to take you to places of even greater surrender so that Christ, who is your very life, would flow out and water barren, searching lives all around you? Would you position yourself to receive His overflow and let it burst forth from inside of you?

I bless you today with life, in the powerful and mighty name of Jesus!
