How Jesus Transforms Lives: Lessons from John 2

“Why Not Now” by Matt Gilman

Scripture

“On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her,

“Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.”

His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.

Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.

And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it.

When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”” -John 2:1-10, ESV

A Significant Moment in Jesus’s Ministry

Jesus stands at a pivotal crossover between his private and public ministry. This moment was the moment that changed everything personally for Jesus. What was hidden was now going to be revealed. The Son of God was stepping on to the scene in a whole new way with signs and wonders! A historical shift was taking place.

As I read this passage, there was such a NOW word for us that hung in my spirit. I believe the best has been saved till now. This generation has been made ready to move in exploits that are greater than any generation preceding them. In the pressing of this time, He is making new wine! And He is preparing us to carry it in this new era.

Before Jesus stands six empty water jugs. In Scripture, the number six is the number for man. I wonder if those six pots represent six disciples who were following Jesus at that point. But nonetheless, we have a number that is symbolic of man. Ordinary water pots were now filled with choice wine.

We have an invitation to be filled to the brim with new wine for this new era. And indeed, He’s saved the best wine till now. More than 3 billion people have yet to taste it. It’s time to let the overflow come!

The new wine needs new wineskins that have been prepared and made ready. After Pentecost, the onlookers looked at the disciples who were so full of the Spirit that many thought they had too much wine when indeed their lives were simply in overflow! Six stone jars meant for cleansing were turned into pots of celebration and wonder at this wedding in Cana! What if someone took a drink of your life, would these taste the miracle of new wine?

This place of celebration launches Jesus’ public ministry. In the last devotional over Passion Week I wrote: “In this hour we are being awakened to the truest gospel—the power, signs, wonders, miracles, and reality of the cross and resurrection—for the love of the world Jesus died for.” He wants to take the wine of our lives and the things that have felt crushing and bring forth something so beautifully intoxicating. We are coming out of hiding and hibernation, sleep and slumber and awakening to what He has prepared us to carry. Your life can be filled to the brim and the overflow can literally change everything for those who simply take a sip.

Living in Light of Christ’s Return

Last night, I ordered food for my family using Uber Eats. A man pulled up with the Bee Gees playing loudly in his car. He looked at me as he handed us our salads and said, “God Bless you. Jesus loves you. Don’t be sad because Jesus loves you.” I was overcome in that moment because the overflow from the Uber Eats delivery man was touching my life. I had been overwhelmed with a weightiness that afternoon that came out of nowhere. The Holy Spirit sent that man in that moment to remind me of the most profound truth of my whole life: Jesus loves me. It doesn’t have to be complicated for us. We just have to be available to carry the wine and let others take a sip.

Sisters, it’s time to get ready for our wedding because it’s coming. It’s going to be the best wedding of all time when our Father hands Jesus His precious Bride. But we have a lot of invitations to get out before that day. I awoke the other night from a deep sleep convinced that Jesus was asking me, “If I returned in two weeks, how would you live?” Our hour has indeed come to get ready (Revelation 19:7). It’s time for a wedding!

I invite you into the same words the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart:

Do you not think I can change the ordinary inside of you into the extraordinary for others? Do you not think I have enough to fill to the brim of your life—a life overflowing with new wine? You better believe I have saved the best for now! This generation will serve the best wine, aged to perfection! Ages and generations of past revivals, miracles, wonders and awakenings will not compare to what is about to released!

Get ready for the new wine to flow from your life! For I have saved the best till now!

“‘The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills … .’” -Amos 9:13

Lord, would you fill up “the overflow” in the lives of my sisters? Do the extraordinary. Do the impossible. Do the miraculous and do it now, in Jesus’ Name.
