As Ken led an East-West short-term mission team to Latin America, he and his translator, Raul, walked through one village’s outdoor market. Vendors sold butchered meats, various types of pasta, rice, vegetables, and clothing. The market was vibrant with colors, but amid the bright displays was an overhanging spiritual darkness. Many people in this village had no relationship with Jesus.
Ken and Raul came across a vendor stall where two women named Maria and Esmerelda sold handmade clothes. The women were hoping to make a sale on a day when it seemed there were more sellers than buyers, so they didn’t mind Ken and Raul sitting down with them to talk.
When Ken began to share the gospel, the women listened attentively. He shared a few Bible verses, and Maria’s eyes began to water as she nodded in agreement and muttered something in Spanish. Ken paused to listen to Maria, who was saying, “I am a sinner. I am a sinner.”
Ken read Romans 5:8 and explained how she could receive forgiveness for her sins. Maria prayed, asking Jesus to forgive her and give her eternal life. She then thanked the Lord for His love and forgiveness.
Maria continued to sob as she reached into her apron and pulled out a banknote of local currency. She handed Ken a burgundy colored bill worth about $8, saying she wanted him to use it to tell others about Jesus. Ken, knowing Maria needed the money, at first tried to politely tell her, “I can’t take your money.” When Maria kept insisting, Raul told Ken he could take the bill.
Ken took the money, opened his Bible, and placed it inside. He told Maria the bill would be a constant reminder to him of her new faith and would motivate him to tell others what Jesus has done for them.
