A Liturgy for Those Visiting a Beautiful Place

The world is full of beauty. Mountains, oceans, and lush landscapes reflect the creative work of the Lord. Yet the world is also full of darkness. Pain hides around every corner, and billions of people don’t know that hope exists. If you desire to see the majesty of God in creation, this liturgy is for you. As you pray, let your heart be reminded that the beauty of the gospel can overcome spiritual darkness.

A Liturgy for Those Visiting a Beautiful Place

My eyes look to the sky,
and I witness the work of an Artist.

As the sun sets beneath the horizon,
You splash the clouds with color.
Fire and ember paint the sky
and display the vastness of Your imagination.

Creator God,
Your masterpiece steals my breath.
I could gaze into this canvas for eternity.

But You’re not done.
Your brushstrokes gradually cover the warm reds with a deep violet
and sprinkle the sky with lights from millions of miles away.

These heavens declare Your glory.
This sky proclaims the work of Your hands.

The sun rises and illuminates the waves on the ocean.
The water catches the light
like a sea of diamonds on the surface.

In Your hands, God,
are the depths of the Earth.
The sea is Yours for You made it.

As I’m transfixed by this world-sized art gallery,
remind my heart to worship the Artist behind this beauty.
May I praise the Creator only,
not the created.

For creation reveals Your glory and majesty.
Apart from You, beauty does not exist.

Flowers that adorn the fields,
waterfalls that dance off of cliffs,
and mountains that climb toward the sky
are all sculpted by the Divine Craftsman.

Lord, I confess that
even I, Your child, am prone to forget
the source of this beauty.

How much more is this true
for those who do not know You—
those who gaze upon Your artistry
but know not the Artist?

You have revealed Your invisible attributes
through Your visible creation,
yet darkness covers their eyes.

God, would You plant truth in their hearts?

As they consider Your wonders,
unaware that they are Your wonders,
rest a beautiful curiosity upon their spirits.
Allow it to grow and flourish
until they can’t dismiss it any longer,
until they are compelled to seek an answer,
until they seek You.

For when they seek You,
they will find You.

And when they find You,
allow them to see all of Your marvelous works—
not just Your creative artistry
but Your work to bring salvation to all people.

For You, God, are also an Architect.
You built the bridge
that leads humanity back to You.

Father, may more souls seek this bridge.
May I rejoice while standing on it
and call on others to join me.

In Your beautiful name I pray.

Amen.
