A Message from our CEO
East-West exists to glorify God by multiplying followers of Jesus in the spiritually darkest areas of the world. This is true in times of flourishing and in times of famine.
The world is coming to grips with the impact of COVID-19. The virus has been labeled as a pandemic and is affecting people across the globe both personally and spiritually. We recognize the gravity of the situation and our reaction is to run to God and rest in His sovereignty, knowing His hand governs the world.
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
In the midst of the global spread of the virus, East-West is diligently taking steps to ensure the safety and continued work of our missionaries, short-term trip participants, and our staff in the U.S. Our response is to care for our team members and their families, who have selflessly dedicated themselves to making the name of Jesus known among the unreached.
Our purpose is to continue shining a light in spiritual darkness, and we are praying for opportunities for the gospel to advance in this time. We know Christ is ultimately our eternal hope in the face of adversity and trials.
“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
-2 Corinthians 4:17-18
As our team seeks to evangelize the lost, equip local believers, multiply disciples of Christ, and plant healthy churches, we greatly covet your prayers to continue the mission God has set before us. Our missionaries are no strangers to hardships—whether facing persecution, health setbacks, or unexpected obstacles—and have persevered in the wake of uncertainty.
We ask that you pray for the safety and endurance of all involved in the ministry, from our missionaries abroad to our staff here at home. We have assurance that the gospel remains true in all circumstances, now and forever. Thank you for your support of East-West and for those on the frontlines of ministry carrying the light of the gospel into darkness.

East-West Mission Field Response
Staying on mission has been the goal for all staff, whether remaining overseas or returning to the states. While this means many things are unscripted, the goal as followers of Jesus should still be to show up and proclaim the gospel. Leadership is working closely to help develop creative means to leverage this time for effective ministry—while methods may change, our mission does not.
For deployed staff that feels the best decision for themselves and their families is to return to the U.S., leadership has encouraged them to build a communications pipeline with the nationals in their area in order to continue coaching and ministry work through online resources such as Zoom, and other digital communication resources.
From the Frontlines
What is East-West doing in response to the threat of coronavirus?
East-West has an internal Crisis Management Team monitoring the situation and providing guidance and direction to our staff. In addition, our Executive Leadership Team and other leaders have been monitoring the local, national, and global evolution of the threat and its impact on our staff, families, and those we work among.
Is East-West still able to operate as normal?
East-West missionaries are no stranger to obstacles in ministry. Even when confronted with as unique an obstacle as the Coronavirus, our global mission force is continuing to adjust and find ways to carry the gospel forward in the spiritually darkest areas of the world. In addition, the operations of the East-West home office have adjusted as well to ensure all operational duties are functioning as normal, albeit in a mostly remote environment. We are grateful for technology and infrastructure that allows us to stay globally connected and productive.
How does this impact upcoming short-term mission teams?
As of March 30, we have postponed all short-term teams through May 31. Starting April 16, teams will be postponed on a rolling 45-day period until further notice. We believe this helps us do our part in “flattening the curve” of the spread of this virus as well as continuing to steward the Lord’s resources well.
How can I be praying?
We certainly covet your prayers during this season of ministry. We know the Lord is sovereign over all and was not caught by surprise with this pandemic. Please pray for our missionaries, national partners, and co-laborers around the world. Pray for stamina, peace, and opportunities to share the gospel even in the midst of this global health crisis.
Help Fulfill the Vision
Despite the uncertainties that we are all facing with COVID-19, the greater tragedy of “unreachedness” continues to pervade our globe. East-West remains focused on eradicating lostness by carrying the Light of the gospel to the unreached.
