For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. –Hebrews 4:12
When training local believers overseas, it is important to make everything as simple as possible (which is much harder than it sounds). Part of their training includes basic disciplines like reading the Bible, prayer, and sharing their faith. So when our training team puts together these lessons, they keep it simple which is how the Sword Method was developed.
The Sword Method helps new believers learn how to read the Bible as well as understand and apply it to their lives. It starts with a simple picture of a sword–showing the 4 sides of it. As they learn, they start to associate the 4 sides of the sword with 4 questions they can ask every time they read a passage of Scripture. The four questions are:
- What do I learn about God?
- What do I learn about man?
- Is there an example to follow?
- Is there a command to be obeyed?
That’s it! Just ask these four questions, and you can read and understand the Bible like believers on the other side of the planet do.
